US number for bank verification abroad: the 2026 guide

US banks and fintech text a verification code to a US mobile before they let you in. Here's why that requirement exists and how to receive the code anywhere in the world.

Last updated: July 2026 · By VNumber

Why US banks require a US mobile number

US banks and fintech tie your phone number to your identity. They send an SMS code to confirm it's really you at signup, when you log in from a new device, when you move money, and any time something looks unusual. That code is meant to reach a US mobile line. The number on file has to be a real +1 cell that can receive an American text.

That's easy when you live in the US with a domestic carrier. It becomes a wall the moment you're abroad: you never had a US line, your carrier suspended roaming, or the number you tried simply isn't the kind of line the bank will text.

Why VoIP and foreign numbers get rejected

Two kinds of numbers fail. The first is VoIP. Voice over internet, not a real cellular line. Google Voice, TextNow, TextFree and similar apps all fall in this bucket, and US banks treat VoIP as a fraud signal and refuse to send the OTP to it. The second is a foreign number: many US banks only send verification SMS to +1 US numbers, so your local line abroad never receives the code.

So you enter the number, hit send, and the code simply never comes. It isn't a glitch, it's policy. The only reliable fix is a real US mobile line.

Banks and fintech that work

A real US mobile line receives the SMS code from the US banks and fintech that verify by text, including:

  • Mercury — business banking that texts a code at signup and on every new-device login.
  • Relay — business banking that verifies your identity by SMS before granting access.
  • Wise — verifies your phone by SMS and re-checks it before releasing larger transfers.
  • Zelle — requires a real US mobile number to enroll and to send or receive money.
  • Chase — sends login and transfer OTPs to the US number on file.
  • Bank of America — texts a one-time code to confirm logins and payments.
  • Payoneer — verifies by SMS before releasing funds into your account.

The Zelle case

Zelle is the strictest of them all. It demands a real US mobile number, not a VoIP line, not a foreign one, to enroll and to move money. That's why Google Voice and free apps are dead ends with Zelle: the enrollment simply won't complete. A VNumber Non-VoIP US line satisfies that requirement, so you can enroll and send or receive money from abroad exactly as you would with a domestic cell.

Questions about US bank verification

It works with US banks and fintech that verify by SMS: Mercury, Relay, Wise, Zelle, Chase, Bank of America and Payoneer among them. VNumber is a real US mobile line (Non-VoIP), so they treat it like any other US cell and send the code to it.

Yes. Zelle requires a real US mobile number to enroll, send and receive money. VNumber is a Non-VoIP US line, so it satisfies Zelle requirements where foreign and VoIP numbers are refused.

US banks block SMS to foreign numbers and flag VoIP (Google Voice, TextNow) as a fraud risk, so the OTP never arrives. A real US mobile line like VNumber passes the check and receives it.

Yes, for the phone verification step. Mercury, Relay and Wise need a real US +1 to confirm your identity and secure your logins; VNumber provides exactly that. You still supply the required documents.

No. Activation is 100% online. Pick a number, check out, and start receiving your bank codes in minutes from any country, over Wi-Fi or data.
